If the machines are NOT using proprietary code, and are scanned and counted in full public view whereupon those observing can validate and verify that tallies are being attributed in the appropriate manner, then this type of machine assisted counting is actually more accurate and less subject to possible corruption than hand counting. As long as perfectly printed paper ballots exist (these are what the machines would count) then a hand count could still be performed in addition to a machine count or if there is some discrepancy which arises.
